Buy Detroit: What They’re Making in Motor City Today
We’ve all heard the news about Detroit. Motor City is on hard times. It’s bankrupt. Its population is quickly shrinking. Arsonists are burning the city down as firefighters struggle to douce flames. And, “Detroit Is Now a Charity Case for Carmakers.”
And there’s also been a lot of hype that the maker movement could offer some salvation. Who knows? That seems like a big ask. But there are already some Detroit-based companies that are carving out a niche and making great things.
There’s also McClure's Pickles (Brooklyn and Detroit) which is undoubtedly making the best pickles and Bloody Mary mix you can buy. Artisanal pickles are a thing. A very beautiful thing. Be warned though that McClure's Spicy Pickles are intense. Suggested: Garlic Dill.
Tait Design Co. makes wooden airplanes like the balsa ones you might have had as a kid. They’re laser cut and Matthew Tait, who designs the planes, screen prints them himself. You can see the whole process here.
These are just a few of the companies remaking Detroit. Of course they won’t replace every job lost in the auto industry. That’s a big hole to fill. But it’s impressive to see what the entrepreneurs in Detroit are doing to remake their city.
