Studs Terkel. There’s no other like him. Not then. Not now. The man went deep into people’s lives. He asked people about their work, their personal stories, and they told him.
The world needs another Studs Terkel right now. The closest we have is probably Mike Rowe. I’m a fan, but it’s a different time and a different program. Rowe works for TV and so the interviews reflect that. Terkel went deep into people’s lives to reveal the “quintessential truth, the essence of a truth.”
Is anyone doing that today? On this cold day, I’m thinking about Studs Terkel and oral history and how, well, even though we have more ways to communicate than ever before, with Twitter and Facebook, we seem to be having less conversations than ever.
