I am thinking about volcanoes this week. I just watched Werner Herzog's documentary Into the Inferno. Like all good documentaries, it tricks you into thinking you're watching a film about one thing, then makes you realize it's about something else entirely.
The subject is of course volcanoes, those giant scary combustible masses of earth and heat that sometimes explode and kill everything and everyone around them. The real focus of the film though is the people who live with the volcanoes - the researchers, the islanders, the villagers - and how they reconcile their close relationships with such danger. Some study the volcanoes to try to control them, some pray to them in awe and some just do their best to live with them and not get killed. It's a fascinating flick.
